Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation Awards O’Gorman High School $50,000 to Start Shop Program

February 5, 2019 - - - With a shortage of labor in the construction industry, the Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation has been working with O’Gorman High School on the creation of a new building trades program. With the start of the school year earlier this fall, the Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation provided a $50,000 grant to the school to bolster local workforce development efforts with the creation of a new building trades program. Funding for the new program was allocated for student textbooks, and purchasing tools and equipment for the shop.

The new program at O’Gorman features two classes: Introduction to Building Construction (three sections) and Carpentry (one section). Interest in the program from students has been truly remarkable according to Alex Anderson, O’Gorman Assistant Principal. “We had sixty students register to take these courses so every class was full. We are very pleased with the excitement these courses gained from both boys and girls.” Anderson says, “the interest and enthusiasm for these courses continues to build so we anticipate another full load of courses being offered next year.”

By adding a new building trades program, the collaborate efforts of the Care Foundation and O’Gorman High School are striving to meet the needs of our community by developing a future skilled workforce.

The overall trend for open construction jobs has been increasing since the end of the Great Recession. This is consistent with survey data indicating that access to labor remains a top business challenge for builders. This is especially true for South Dakota and the Sioux Falls MSA area.

Did you know that it takes an average of 22 different subcontractors to build a home? Analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) shows that 70% of builders typically use somewhere between 11 and 30 subcontractors to build a single-family home. Homebuilders rely on a number of highly trained workers to get the job done right. This includes dozens of skilled artisans and professionals, including carpenters, architects, engineers, plumbers, electricians, painters and landscapers.

The Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation is partnering with educators, and home builders and contractors in the Sioux Empire to address the housing industry’s labor shortages and to develop a skilled workforce for the future.
