Repair Affair Applications Sought

March 2017 (SIOUX FALLS, SD) - - - The Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire (HBASE) is now accepting applications for the community service program called the Repair Affair, where homes are remodeled for free to meet the accessibility needs of people who are at least 65 years old or permanently disabled. Homeowners with a dependent who is disabled would also qualify for the program.

Many people suffer from different impairments where fairly routine movements may seem difficult or near impossible. The following are some examples of home improvements that could make their life a bit easier: wheelchair ramps, widening doors or openings, grab bars for bathrooms, handrails for front/back steps and replacing turn knobs with push and pull levers for both doors and faucets.

A coordination committee, in conjunction with the Sioux Falls Community Development, reviews the applications and determines which projects to undertake. Marking its 24th anniversary, the Repair Affair volunteers will complete a number of projects on June 6, 2017 (date subject to change) at no charge to the homeowner. The materials are paid for through a grant from Sioux Falls Community Development and the Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation.

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria (subject to change):

  • Must own the home and it must be within the Sioux Empire
(Lincoln, Minnehaha, McCook and Turner county borders)
  • Applicant’s home must be a single-family dwelling that they occupy
  • The applicant, or dependent, must have a permanent disability OR be 65 years of age or older
  • Because volunteers complete the work, extensive projects will not be considered
  • Accessibility improvements will not be done on mobile homes

The applicant’s household incomes (minus ongoing medical expenses) must be within the following guidelines (2017 income guidelines provided by Department of HUD and are subject to change):
